Show Review: The Lee Boys with guest Luther Dickinson - Proud Larry’s (April 25)

Robert Randolph has nothing on these guys.  This was one of the best shows by a Sacred Steel artist I’ve ever seen.

Double Decker Festival 2007 Preview

It’s that time of the year. Time for the streets of Oxford to be flooded with music, art, and halter tops. This year’s headliner is Buddy Guy. Some are disappointed, but I anticipate a great show. For a complete schedule with links to Myspace sites, read on.

Show and Album Reviews: Julie Lee’s Oxford weekend

Julie Lee rolled into Oxford on April 12 and played Thacker Mountain Radio.  I was instantly captivated, and it’s been a while since that happened for me with a new artist at Thacker.  I bought both CD’s and dove in to them at work the next day.  Her debut album, Stillhouse Road, was nice, but [...]

Show Reviews: The week in Review…

Backyard Tire Fire on Tuesday got the week off to a grand start in Oxford.  There were some mentionable shows Wednesday (Charlie Mars at Larry’s and Perpetual Groove at The Library), but I did not make it.
One Thursday, Mayhem String Band had their CD release party at Proud Larry’s, and it was quite a show.  Max Williams, Rosamand [...]

Show Review: Backyard Tire Fire - Proud Larry’s (April 9)

Black Crowes without the theatrics.  Great Vocals.  Southern rock.  Any band that covers Uncle Tupelo and Rush in the same show is on my team.  I bought 2 CD’s.  (4 shakes of the tail feather out of 5)

Show Review: Rocket 88 - Two Stick (April 5)

This was a great show, as usual.  I’ve heard Rocket 88’s style described as ‘juke joint gospel,’ and I have to disagree.  This is simply rock-and-roll.  Sure there are a couple of gospel classics thrown into most sets, but for the majority of each show, they simply rock out.  Rosamond Posey’s sultry vocals combined with [...]

Album Review: Kings of Leon (Because of the Times)

Because of the Times is exactly what I was hoping for in a follow-up the 2005 Kings of Leon effort, Aha Shake Heartbreak. There’s a lot of variety here.  There are really two albums. The first half of album is perfect when it’s time to bump up the tempo on the day.   Track one (Knocked Up) gets things [...]

Here comes another music blog

I love my job, but if money were not an issue, it’s not what I would be doing.  I would be a music writer.  I buy music.  I go to live music shows.  I talk about music.  I read about music.  I have strong opinions about what I see and hear.  It won’t hurt to [...]
